IRON WAY

Our mission is to provide creative storytelling through video for ideas, people, and brands that add value to the world.

The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails, whereon my soul is grooved to run. Over unsounded gorges, through the rifled hearts of mountains, under torrents’ beds, unerringly I rush! Naught’s an obstacle, naught’s an angle to the IRON WAY! - Captain Ahab, Moby Dick

CO-FOUNDER: Kelly Cox

After co-founding Iron Way; Kelly Cox became the co-creator, and host, of award-winning The Original Fare, where for the past five years she’s zig-zagged the globe to uncover where our ingredients truly originate from. She's worked in factory farm chicken houses in the American South, learned from master cheese makers in mouth-watering Loire Valley, plucked tea leaves with the women in Sri Lanka and India, and nearly lost the feeling in her feet reef net fishing in Hana Bay, Maui. But for real story: buy her a whiskey and ask her about hunting with sealers on icebergs in Newfoundland.

The Original Fare streams nationally with PBS and is distributed internationally by TVF to China, Thailand, New Zealand, Belarus, and Eastern Europe. At this point we can’t count the audience but it starts around 15 million.

She made her feature directorial debut with Big Dream, which follows seven ambitious young women around the world who will stop at nothing to achieve their Big Dream.

Produced in partnership with Microsoft, UN Women, White House Office of Science & Technology, UNICEF, and National Science Foundation-- Big Dream was selected in the American Film Showcase in partnership with the US State Department. She traveled from villages in northern Zambia, the jungles of Peru, ancient cities in Algeria, guarded communities in Haiti, and neighborhoods up and down the vastness of Thailand- exchanging with young women of all cultures a common goal: Girl Power and Gender Equality.

Once upon a time she created digital shorts for The Walt Disney Company, produced green spots for Alec Baldwin and the US Open, and interviewed some of the most game-changing innovators of our time with the National Academy of Engineering.

CO-FOUNDER Lucas Longacre

Lucas' extensive technical expertise was earned through over 20 years in the industry; dangling from the rafters as a grip for Nickelodeon, shining a light into Paul McCartney's face as PA for MTV, running tapes and batteries for cable news at ground zero during the 9-11 attacks, capturing location audio for Extreme Makeover Home Edition, interviewing celebrities on red carpet events, recording audio for Rockstar Games at their motion capture studio. Directing Alec Baldwin for US Open spots (more like being directed by Alec Baldwin); Lucas has worked professionally in almost every position in almost every format. Buy him a beer and he will chew your ear off for hours with his weird adventures.

He's THE one-man band, producing and directing from behind the camera with audio gear dangling from his belt. And as he will remind his students at the Art Institute of Portland (where he teaches part time), "Audio is the 50% of your product, and the most underappreciated part."

Lucas' skills allowed Iron Way to capture our feature length documentary, Big Dream, in 4 countries on a limited budget and even smaller timeline, and created the visual narrative for the first food series of its kind, now on it's 5th season at PBS.

His short films have been accepted into festivals and won awards. Once upon a time he won 2nd best fight choreography for his short, Beat, at the Action on Film Festival. He's been profiled in the Oregon Business Journal. He is currently wrapping post production on his latest short film Food Cart, a lampoon and celebration of the Portland food scene.

The show excels thanks to Cox’s quirky, on-and-off screen presence and wonderful, “Fuck: food is great!” attitude. There is no shame in what she does and, like all PBS shows, they strive to be entertaining and somewhat educational. - Kyle , 1234kyle5678

Both Longacre and Cox hope to revive what they claim is the lost art of narrative. “What’s getting lost is a point of view,” says Longacre, referring to Instagram and Snapchat quick-hit communication modes. “It’s all just: ‘How do I grab whatever I can and kick this stuff out?’” - Winston Ross, Oregon Business Journal

Exercise #1

Tell a story with only still pictures that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Introduce characters. There should be conflict. There should be resolution. And you have one hour to complete. The gallery below is an example created by your professors for your reference.

Submit your work through the classroom portal.

Assignment #1

Write an outline of your short film. An outline should contain a description of your main characters (hero, antagonist, supporting cast) major plot points, the beginning, the middle and the end of the story, the big crisis that fuels your story and the resolution.
